  Equipment improves quality of life

In November 2009 AMAQ Foundation President Dr Steve Hambleton presented a cheque for $10,588 to Muscular Dystrophy Queensland (MDQ) to purchase an electric wheelchair for a South East Queensland man.

The donation followed a request from MDQ highlighting the need for support to help patients with Muscular Dystrophy.

MDQ State Manager Mr Rick Carr said the new wheelchair would provide the patient with improved mobility and access to the community, and a vastly improved quality of life.

He also said the patient’s increased level of independence would reduce his reliance on family members and carers for support, and allow him to reconnect with his community through the simplification of daily activities, such as accessing public transport.

Mr Carr said working was often difficult or impossible for people living with a neuromuscular condition meaning it was often hard for them to gain the financial resources required to purchase medical equipment.

Mr Carr extended his sincerest thanks to the staff and board of the AMAQ Foundation, on behalf of the Queensland Muscular Dystrophy community, for their continued support of the organisation.

AMAQ Foundation President Dr Hambleton said the Foundation was pleased to make the donation, and the benefits extended well beyond the individual, providing relief for a wide group of supporters.

The donation was assisted by funding from Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, the Foundation’s largest corporate supporter.
